I got to sit rinkside for a Solar Bears game today!
My love of hockey is something that I discovered relatively later in life. If you had asked me to go to a hockey game when I was living in Canada I probably would have laughed at you and went off to read an Anne Rice novel in a closet somewhere. In the dark. Where sports couldn’t hurt me.
But I think local sports are infectious. Orlando City Soccer has become so ingrained with Orlando residents’ love of the city that I think it kind of normalized the fun that comes with cheering on a local team. The joy you can find in having a beer with friends and strangers and loving where you live while wearing team jerseys - which is probably the gayest reason to love going to a game.
The Orlando Solar Bears invited Jon Busdeker and myself to record an episode of “Bungalower and The Bus” there this week, and rather than sititng in the stands as per usual, we were treated to a rink-side table where people bay tens of thousands of dollars each season to enjoy the game. And it was blissful. We couuld see the spit and the sweat and the missing teeth, just feet away.
