Fashion Roundup: Remembering the recently-fired Don Cherry
So, long-time “Hockey Night in Canada” host, Don Cherry, has always had a history of just “talking like it is.” He’s been in plenty of hot water pots before and always managed to elbow his way out but it seems the time has come and the grumpy grandpa of Canadian sports television has been let go.
The television “personality” was let go for making remarks on Saturday, November 9th while hosting the show and discussing the importance of wearing a poppy pin during Remembrance Day. The national holiday falls on November 11th, which Americans would call Veteran’s Day and it serves the same purpose, to honor those who have served their country in the military. In Canada, you show your support by wearing a pin that you buy on the street from someone in a scarf with rosy cheeks. The funds go to The Royal Canadian Legion who have trademarked the image.
Cherry’s comments were seemingly directed towards immigrants who may not understand the significance of the pin.
But regardless of where you fall on that controversy and the departure of Cherry from his throne atop the Canadian sports television kingdom, the man has had a history of loud, unapologetic style which is notable in the somewhat conservative North.
Here are some of my favorite moments.
