There are "black fences" in a white Orlando suburb that nobody talks about
In 1994, the Orlando neighborhood of College Park, received a series of black fences from City Hall that served to block a number of cross streets along the border of a Black neighborhood nearby, Parramore.
It was believed that College Park had an inordinate amount of cut-through traffic and crime and that the only way to fight it was to install these fences and walls to insulate and protect the properties on the other side.
When a Black neighboorhood nearby sought the same treatment, City Hall rebuked them and told them that fences don’t fight crime.
I wrote an article about it on Bungalower.com and the responses from the community were so interesting and so divisive.
