49 birdhouses for lives that we lost
Following the Pulse shootings, there was a massive uptick in public art installations in response to the general grief and shock the entire city was experiencing from the unexpected murder of 49 LGBTQ+ dancers in the wee hours of the morning.
I convinced my crew at ArtReach Orlando to let me host a community project where locals could donate and paint 49 birdhouses that would be installed at one of the most popular bakery/brunch hot spots in the City, Se7enbites Bakeshop.
The turnout was incredible and we had such a heart-filled time coming together to leave this colorful monument of hope for everyone to see and smile at.
The pole, once finished, is one of the most Instagrammed pieces of public art in the city and has withstood three hurricanes, mostly in tact. We did have to replace a few of them last year.
Side Note: My partner, Scottie Campbell, put a poem he wrote in the top birdhouse .
